Interview about Tetra Connector Color Markers, winner of the A' Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design Award 2018
Tetra is an amusing color marker with interactive building toys for kids and the idea of tetra marker is not only encourage children to be creative but encourage them to reuse the marker rather than simply discarding these into the trash after the ink dried up and this will help kids to develop and raise awareness of reuse among them. The shape of a tetra cap makes it easy to press and pull out. Kids can put each cap and pen barrel together to form a shape and explore to build a new abstract shape and it’s up to their imagination bend the rule and come up with new structures.

View Design DetailsReusability was central to our creative process for the Tetra Connector Color Markers. We wanted to move beyond disposable markers by creating something that stays useful even after the ink runs out. The interlocking design lets kids reuse and connect the markers like building blocks, turning them into a fun, creative toy. This approach helps children learn about reusing materials at an early stage, building lasting habits and encouraging a positive behavioral shift toward sustainability .
The geometric form of the Tetra Connector Color Markers was inspired by building blocks and modular toys that encourage creativity and problem solving. The tetra inspired shape allows children to connect, stack, and create various structures, blending art with play. This design not only improves fine motor skills but also nurtures spatial awareness and imagination. By integrating geometry into a familiar object like a marker, learning becomes a natural and engaging part of creative exploration.
The idea for Tetra Connector Color Markers began with a simple thought kids naturally blend play and creativity. We wanted to design something that encourages both artistic expression and imaginative building while promoting positive habits. The concept evolved from observing how children use everyday objects as toys. By combining markers with interlocking geometric shapes, we turned a regular stationery item into a tool for creativity, reuse, and learning. A key intent was to influence kid behavior early on helping them understand the value of reusing and minimizing waste from a young age.
Developing the snap-fit mechanism was one of the most challenging parts of Tetra Connector Color Markers. We needed a connection that was strong enough for repeated play yet easy and safe for children to use. Achieving the right balance between tightness, flexibility, and durability required multiple iterations and material tests. We also prioritized child safety ensuring there were no sharp edges or small detachable parts. The final design provides a secure yet smooth snap action, encouraging creative construction while maintaining safety and long-term usability
Tetra Connector Color Markers were designed to bridge the gap between creativity, learning, and behavioral development. Through their modular, connectable form, children are encouraged to collaborate, share, and build together fostering teamwork and communication skills. The act of connecting and reusing markers reinforces positive behavioral patterns such as organization, problem-solving, and environmental awareness. By integrating play with purposeful design, the product nurtures fine motor skills, spatial understanding, and social interaction, supporting holistic growth beyond traditional stationery use.
Balancing creativity and functionality was central to the design of Tetra Connector Color Markers. The modular form allows children to explore open-ended play building shapes, structures, and patterns while maintaining the core function of a reliable writing instrument. Each component was engineered with precise dimensions to ensure smooth ink flow and secure snap-fit connections without compromising usability. This balance enables children to shift seamlessly between drawing and constructing, nurturing both imaginative expression and practical skill development within a single, cohesive product.
Environmental consciousness was a core consideration in designing Tetra Connector Color Markers. We selected materials that can be recycled and reused, along with recycled and renewable components for the marker bodies and packaging. Our non-toxic, water-based inks and manufacturing processes minimize waste and energy consumption while ensuring high-quality, durable products. This approach balances sustainability with long-lasting performance.
During the three-month development of Tetra Connector Color Markers in Noida, India, we gained key insights from both local and global children's product markets. Locally, we observed a strong preference for durable, safe, and easy-to-use products, while globally, trends emphasized environmental consciousness, ergonomic design, and modular play. We also focused on understanding kids’ behavior and usage patterns with stationery and toys, which helped us design markers that encourage creativity, play, and learning. These insights led to a product that is safe, long-lasting, eco-friendly, and engaging, resonating with children across diverse markets.
Building on the success of Tetra Connector Color Markers, we envision evolving the concept to further support future educational needs and environmental responsibility. This includes integrating interactive learning elements, such as modular designs that teach color theory, creativity, and problem-solving, while encouraging collaborative play. On the sustainability front, we aim to enhance recyclability, use more renewable materials, and reduce carbon footprint throughout the product lifecycle. By combining innovative educational features with eco-conscious design, the next generation of Tetra Markers can inspire creativity, learning, and environmental awareness simultaneously.
The Tetra Connector Color Markers were designed to encourage both individual creativity and collaborative play. Each marker features a modular connector system, allowing children to join markers together, build patterns, or share tools while working on group projects. This design also fosters reuse habits in kids and encourages them to learn by observing how other children use the markers. At the same time, the markers maintain ergonomic design and high-quality ink performance, ensuring they function seamlessly as traditional coloring tools. By combining connectivity, functionality, and social learning, we created a product that promotes teamwork, creativity, and sustainable habits.
