Interview about Galaktika Armchair, winner of the A' Furniture Design Award 2018

About the Project

Galaktika is an armchair designed especially for airport VIP lounges or public spaces where people need to spend more time and their staying have to be comfortable. This armchair has double function. It can be used either for sitting or resting. Depending on your needs you can choose one of the two position. The upper bar is rotatable and can be used to attach electronic devices.

Your innovative dual-function design of the Galaktika Armchair challenges traditional airport seating paradigms - could you walk us through the conceptual journey that led to this transformative approach?

We all know that sometimes, waiting at the airport could be boring. That is why, a practical solution that could help us pass the time in an interesting way seemed very reasonable.

The spherical aesthetics of the Galaktika Armchair create a striking visual presence - what inspired you to base the entire design language around circular forms, and how does this shape influence the user experience?

The whole concept is based on the spherical elements. The name Galaktika represents this galaxy of multiple spheres, connected in this complete mini univerce.

The switching mechanism in the Galaktika Armchair was cited as your biggest challenge - could you elaborate on the engineering complexities you encountered and how you ultimately achieved this seamless transition between sitting and resting positions?

Indeed, the mechanism used to switch between sitting and relaxing positions was the most challenging part of this project. Hidden behind the side caps it simply swings the armchair front and back.

How does the Galaktika Armchair's rotatable upper bar for electronic devices reflect your observations of modern travelers' needs, and what considerations guided your integration of this technological element?

When you need to rest, its not very convenient to have your hands busy. That is why, this rotatable upper bar was added as a feature, to help you hang various types of electronic devices.

The Galaktika Armchair earned Silver recognition at the A' Design Award - how did this achievement influence your perspective on designing furniture for public spaces, particularly in terms of balancing aesthetics with functionality?

For creating successful and sustainable design, keeping balance between aesthetics with functionality is very important. If you leave the functionality aside, you could just have a piece of art and nothing more.

Your choice of materials for the Galaktika Armchair - from chrome-plated bars to leather-covered spherical elements - creates an interesting interplay of textures; what guided your material selection process?

Actually, there are more than just this set of materials. An interesting combination between wood and white acrylic material, gave us a version for domestic purposes. Black matt powder coated metalic structure, combined with red velvet gave is the club look.

The Galaktika Armchair emerged from your transition from electrical engineering to design - how did your technical background influence your approach to solving the unique challenges of airport lounge furniture?

Very much indeed. Every gathered skill is useful, no matter if its engineering, 3D CAD modeling, graphic design, etc. Industrial design requires to be not just an artist but a practical engineer as well.

Could you share insights into how the Magma design philosophy of continuous transformation shaped the development process of the Galaktika Armchair from initial concept to final product?

As you mentioned, the philosophy behind Magma design is continuous transformation and improvement. If i have to return to this project right now, i can still proceed in direction of searcing for more and more options to imporove it.

What user feedback or observations from airport environments most significantly influenced the ergonomic considerations in the Galaktika Armchair's design?

When you hear Galaktika (Galaxy) you think more of traveling into space rather than using just a plane. Despite that i think that not just the name but the whole concept fits perfectly in airport enviroment.

Looking ahead, how do you envision the Galaktika Armchair's design principles influencing the future of adaptive furniture in high-traffic public spaces?

If this armchair could be used as a starting point for further improvements of the airport furniture, i will be more than happy. Finding the way to create them more useful and attractive is the key, i think.
