Interview about Avant Bathroom Furniture, winner of the A' Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design Award 2025

About the Project

Avant, a collection of suspended furniture with a design contemporary and timeless beauty, which exalts the simplicity of the rectangular shape. A robust and minimalist perimeter frame in relief, encloses the profile of the suspended furniture. The fronts are assembled, thanks to the exclusive brushed aluminum profile, a distinctive feature of the collection, which allows different thicknesses of top and/or glass to be joined, creating an asymmetrical and balanced relationship. Sight and touch coexist in a dialectical relationship, in a multisensory composition through shapes and materials.

Your innovative integration of a perimeter frame in Avant Bathroom Furniture creates a striking visual balance - could you elaborate on how this design element emerged from your creative process and what it represents in terms of contemporary bathroom aesthetics?

The idea of a relief frame that draws and encloses the profile of the furniture arises as a primary objective of combining in a single element the aesthetics and the unexploited function in the design of doors and drawers of home furniture, which consists of the play of volumes and combinability of materials. It also runs on columns, on open elements, on wall units creating a pleasant continuum.

The Avant Bathroom Furniture collection masterfully combines lacquered surfaces with natural textures - what inspired your decision to juxtapose these contrasting materials, and how does this duality enhance the user experience?

This is a feature that is representative of many of my furniture designs for the habitat. I have always understood that furniture is looked at and touched. All the senses are important to create well-being.

Given the challenge of balancing high visual impact with cost-effective manufacturing for Avant Bathroom Furniture, how did you achieve this delicate equilibrium while maintaining the collection's distinctive design elements?

The biggest challenge was, like almost all industrial projects, the optimization of processes and costs, without sacrificing aesthetic features. Undoubtedly, working from the beginning of the project with industrial partners specialized in aluminum injection systems, has made it possible to control and optimize technology, material and manufacturing costs, in each of the phases, reaching very optimal results.

The asymmetrical relationships created by varying depths in Avant Bathroom Furniture are particularly intriguing - could you share your thought process behind these dimensional variations and their role in modern bathroom design?

The current trend is based on very clean lines and planes. This circumstance, in my opinion, makes all products similar. The fact of increasing volumes aesthetically is transgressive to me while allowing the combination of several materials and textures with the same assembly element.

Your exclusive brushed aluminum profile in Avant Bathroom Furniture allows for different thicknesses of materials to be joined - how did this technical innovation evolve, and what possibilities does it open for future bathroom furniture design?

The specific design and development of the structural aluminium profile – (which allows combining board and glass, together with the number of combinable materials ranging from melamine boards, lacquered MDF boards and boards covered with varnished natural wood veneer), is the technological essence of the AVANT collection. Some of the materials used are super matte melamines or wood effect, that is, protected with a crystallized resin at high temperatures, which makes them more resistant to water and humidity, as well as easy to clean. Others have a matte and soft finish, made of cellulose and innovative resins, treated with nanotechnology to make it anti-imprint, hygienic, resistant to water, shocks and scratches. With this type of material, small scratches can also be adjusted: you just need to cover with a damp cloth and pass with the iron.

The minimalist aesthetic of Avant Bathroom Furniture seems to challenge traditional bathroom storage conventions - what insights about contemporary living informed your approach to functionality and space optimization?

The Avant Bathroom Furniture Collection is available in different heights, depths and storage solutions. For example, columns: with one, two or more doors to place next to each other and combine them. The vertical wall cabinet can alternate closed volumes and transparencies that let light through, creating a feeling of spaciousness and brightness, and are equipped with interior lighting and glass shelves. Light and sophisticated containers that blend harmoniously, giving the composition an effect of formal lightness in any bathroom space.

As sustainability becomes increasingly crucial in design, how does Avant Bathroom Furniture's material selection and production process reflect your commitment to environmental responsibility?

As I mentioned before, some of the boards that make up the structure and fronts of the Avant collection, are composed of cellulose and innovative resins, are treated with nanotechnology to make it hygienic, resistant to water, shocks and scratches. It is true that these materials have a higher cost, but the end user is increasingly concerned about ecological and recyclable products.

The integration of smoked glass elements in Avant Bathroom Furniture creates fascinating visual dynamics - could you discuss how these transparent elements contribute to the collection's overall design narrative?

The vertical wall cabinet can alternate closed volumes and transparencies that let light through, creating a feeling of spaciousness and brightness, and are equipped with interior lighting and glass shelves. Light and sophisticated containers that blend harmoniously, giving the composition an effect of formal lightness in any bathroom space. The Avant Led mirrors are backlit on the perimeter, and the practical vanity mirror enhances their functionality through a practical movement.

Your extensive market research clearly influenced Avant Bathroom Furniture's development - how did user feedback and industry trends shape the final design decisions while maintaining your unique creative vision?

Both the analysis and subsequent market study, as well as sociological studies of functional and aesthetic needs for the defined age range, gave us the clues to define the breafing of this product-collection. To this we add the distinctive feature, which was the profile that supports the multiple combinations of textures and materials.

Looking ahead, how do you envision Avant Bathroom Furniture influencing future bathroom design trends, and what aspects of this collection do you believe will have lasting impact on the industry?

Avant is a tale of beauty that speaks through shapes and materials. Sight and touch coexist in a dialectical relationship, in a multisensory composition. "Details are not details, they are design" and "design is the art of industrial society"
