View Design DetailsOne of the most critical technical challenges in Infinito was enabling multidirectional 360-degree rotation while ensuring complete water resistance.Achieving seamless movement in all directions inherently introduces points of vulnerability especially in outdoor conditions where exposure to water, humidity, and temperature fluctuations is inevitable. To add to the complexity, the internal lighting components generate heat, which demanded a solution that could also provide thermal insulation without compromising flexibility or sealing performance.Through extensive research, material testing, and iterative prototyping, we developed a solution based on precision-engineered silicone microcomponents. These components offered exceptional resistance to both moisture and heat, while maintaining the flexibility required for dynamic mechanical integration. This multilayered design solution allowed us to preserve the minimal visual language of Infinito without sacrificing its technical performance or durability.
As we explored solutions, we were drawn to the concept of continuity a light that could flow endlessly, adapt effortlessly, and blend seamlessly into its environment. This led us to the philosophy of infinity.Instead of mimicking the infinity symbol, we captured its essence in the design: a single, fluid form where two cylindrical volumes are joined by a diagonal cut. This cut not only enables smooth, endless motion but also serves as a visual nod to infinity. The design process was a balancing act between engineering challenges and aesthetic clarity. We faced hurdles in minimizing the gap between the cylinders, which pushed us to innovate with diagonal cuts. These cuts solved the engineering puzzle, allowing fluid rotation with minimal spacing, while also reinforcing the infinity concept through the form.Throughout the design of Infinito, we tackled the challenge of keeping the cylinders as close as possible without compromising movement. The diagonal cuts were our breakthrough they enabled seamless rotation, reduced the gap, and brought the philosophy of infinity to life in both function and form. What you see today is a light that blends precise engineering with elegant design, creating a sense of infinite motion that interacts beautifully with any space.
Infinito is designed to be versatile, robust, and sustainable, and achieving this balance was a key focus for us. For the lighting component, we chose high efficiency Cree LED chips, known for their exceptional performance. These chips deliver bright, high-quality light with minimal energy consumption and an impressive lifespan, making the product both durable and energy efficient. For the materials, we prioritized sustainability by using minimal plastic and opting for 6063 aluminum alloy for the main structure. This alloy is lightweight, strong, and highly recyclable, with a production process that uses relatively low energy. Its flexibility also allowed us to create a sleek, functional design without compromising durability. The production process itself was engineered for efficiency. By streamlining manufacturing, we reduced energy use and waste, ensuring that Infinito is not only adaptable and long lasting but also environmentally responsible from start to finish.
Crafting Infinito to rotate freely through a full 360 degrees while staying resiliently waterproof was a formidable challenge that demanded creative ingenuity. Our breakthrough came by harnessing the remarkable physical and chemical properties of silicone for insulation. At the heart of Infinito’s “neck,” where two intricately connected cylinders pivot, we integrated robust silicone O-rings and seals. These meticulously designed components not only shield the light against water infiltration but also endure high temperatures with unwavering reliability. This elegant solution empowers Infinito to deliver seamless, fluid rotation while maintaining uncompromised durability and waterproof integrity, blending engineering brilliance with functional artistry.
Receiving this award has provided me with a strong motivation to further pursue a path of sustainable and versatile design, especially within the realm of outdoor lighting. However, this inspiration extends beyond lighting alone; it has encouraged me to adopt a broader and deeper perspective on sustainable and adaptable design across various design disciplines, placing greater value on sustainability capabilities. This recognition also increases our responsibility towards future design endeavors, compelling us to act with greater precision and excellence, and reinforcing our commitment to advancing innovative and sustainable design goals.
In many instances, we observed that users incur significant costs and material consumption merely to illuminate limited areas within architectural spaces. This situation poses several challenges: first, a lack of environmental harmony due to the sheer number of light sources; second, elevated expenses; and third, the complexity and time consuming nature of installation, procurement, and maintenance processes. As someone who has always sought to create products that independently solve multiple problems, these factors inspired me to design a lighting solution that addresses these challenges comprehensively. Our accumulated experience and observations throughout our work enabled us to better understand the challenges posed by varying weather conditions, diverse installation sites, and lighting angles. Considering these factors, we designed the product to be highly adaptable, weather resistant, and capable of adjustable orientation to perform effectively across diverse outdoor scenarios. Our experience has guided us toward creating a solution that is both multifunctional and sustainable.
As previously mentioned, to minimize the gap between the two cylinders in our design, we implemented two angled cuts on each cylinder. These cuts not only allowed us to better express the infinity form but also enabled a full 360-degree rotation with the minimal possible gap between the cylinders. Consequently, these angled cuts provided the means to achieve maximum rotational efficiency while accurately and elegantly representing the infinity shape.Attention to such details is extremely important to us details that might often be overlooked elsewhere but minimizing gaps and such precise considerations are evident throughout all of our designs.
Infinito Light removes the need for multiple fixtures by combining several functions into one product. This reduces material use and lowers costs, reflecting an efficient and sustainable design philosophy. Our approach balances versatility, durability, and sustainability to meet the evolving demands of indoor and outdoor lighting. We selected high performance Cree LED chips to ensure bright, high quality light with low energy consumption and long lifespan, supporting both sustainability and performance. Using 6063 aluminum alloy a lightweight, strong, and recyclable material allowed us to create a durable yet elegant fixture while minimizing plastic use to reduce environmental impact. Additionally, our optimized manufacturing process minimizes energy use and waste, making Infinito Light adaptable to various lighting needs while maintaining high standards of sustainability.
Our choice to integrate Cree LED chips into Infinito Light was based on their exceptional technical performance and long-standing reputation for reliability. Cree LEDs are known for their high luminous efficacy (lumens per watt), precise spectral modulation, and superior thermal stability all of which were critical to achieving both energy efficiency and consistent light quality in our design. Specifically, we selected models with a high CRI (Color Rendering Index), which is essential in architectural and outdoor applications where accurate color representation of materials and surroundings matters. These LEDs maintain color consistency over time, even under varying environmental conditions, which aligns perfectly with the long-term performance requirements of Infinito. Moreover, Cree’s advanced thermal management allows for stable operation without excessive heat buildup, reducing the need for additional cooling elements and extending the overall lifespan of the product. To further enhance light quality, we paired these LEDs with specialized lenses that offer precise beam control and uniform light distribution. The result is aglare free, visually comfortable experience that performs exceptionally across different environments, from ambient architectural settings to functional outdoor spaces.
One of the most unexpected and meaningful challenges during the six month development of Infinito Light was engineering the rotation mechanism for an outdoor fixture. Unlike indoor lighting, outdoor environments introduce unique and demanding variables such as dust, water, rain, and wind that significantly impact the functionality and longevity of movable components. At the same time, ensuring easy maintenance and durability for a flexible outdoor product adds another layer of complexity. This particular challenge turned out to be a truly inspiring part of the process, one that taught me a great deal and brought valuable insights I will carry into future projects. The most important lesson I learned is that every constraint or difficulty can be an opportunity for a designer because often, these are the areas that haven’t yet been deeply explored. For me, design is about not passing over problems, but using them as catalysts to create something new, thoughtful, and innovative.
