Interview about Leaf Roof Solar Panel Collection, winner of the A' Generative, Algorithmic, Parametric and AI-Assisted Design Award 2024
The carport boasts a distinctive roof shaped like a leaf, notable not only for its practicality but for its extraordinary design as well. Drawing inspiration from the natural world, particularly the adeptness and grace with which leaves gather sunlight, this design is a tribute to nature's efficiency. Its solar panels effectively capture sunlight, converting it into electrical power for recharging electric vehicles beneath it. This method promotes a shift away from fossil fuels, thereby decreasing carbon footprints and championing sustainable energy use.

View Design DetailsRenewable technology is crucial for a cleaner future, but technology alone is not enough as it must also fit into our built environment. This way, for example, solar power can be widely integrated into urban areas without facing widespread opposition.
The pilot version of the concept is still in the planning stage, but the framework and structure can be implemented using steel, with solar panels potentially made from tempered nano panels. The biggest challenge has been securing funding and a suitable location, as testing this in northern conditions is not feasible due to snow.
In the work of a lawyer, one observes cause-and-effect relationships between matters, and this aspect of my role ties into being an external observer in various projects.
The structure is intended to be implemented modularly, with each unit covering approximately 25–30 m² and generating 5 kWp. Increasing the number of units also increases the power output. Efficiency can be further enhanced by using bifacial panels and orienting them at the optimal angle.
AI is a tool, just like word processing or design software. Creating visualizations with it doesn’t require the skills of a graphic designer, enabling professionals from various fields to participate in the process. In essence, the result perfectly matches the idea I had in mind and wanted to bring to life.
In general, managing and utilizing energy follows the same principles as solar power overall. For example, on a hot day, the panels provide cooling shade over vehicles while simultaneously charging their batteries for driving and cooling purposes. In cold weather, the electricity generated by the panels can be used to heat the vehicles to an optimal temperature.
In general, the key considerations in the material choices for the final commercial product are a high recycling rate, energy efficiency throughout the entire manufacturing chain, and durability. One option is to combine a highly durable frame with some lightweight material such as carbon fiber. From a sustainability perspective, the worst solution is one that doesn’t last.
The plan has successfully sparked a discussion about whether future structures should not only function well but also look good. In today’s world of digital design, there is no justification for unattractive structures other than lower construction costs.
I hope we increasingly recognize the potential for great aesthetic solutions, while also having the courage to be critical and demand visual values from our built environment.
The journey toward a cleaner future is long, and much of the potential for renewable energy production remains untapped. I hope that discussions will be encouraged among experts from various fields and that topics will be approached with curious enthusiasm.
