Interview about Collection Faceted Furniture, winner of the A' Furniture Design Award 2024

About the Project

The story of Faceted began a year ago in Tirol, the heart of Austrian Alps. Unique landscape, fresh air, divine forests, authentic architecture and woodcraft based on traditions became the powerful source of inspiration for Palnychenko-design studio. Faceted is designed to explicit the unique experience of Tirol, where nature and people coexist and complement each other, using natural resources, cherishing traditions and taking care of the environment. Palnychenko-design studio takes a look at the traditional local wood from a modern angel in order to bring it out in a fresh design.

Your innovative approach to traditional Tirolean spruce wood in Collection Faceted Furniture beautifully merges heritage with contemporary design - could you elaborate on how your experience in the Austrian Alps shaped your creative vision for this collection?

It is hard to be an outsider when you are in Tyrol. Wherever you look, there are breathtaking views: towering mountains with snow-capped peaks and green slopes, valleys with rushing rivers, or small, cosy villages where old wooden farmhouses coexist with modern glass, concrete and wood architectural forms. The medieval university building is successfully intertwined with the architectural modernity of glass and concrete. An average small polyclinic in the city district impresses with its modern interiors and high-quality designer furniture. Everywhere - where you throw your glance, you can feel the love and inspiration of the craftsmen: architect, designer, carpenter, builder. All these amazing combinations of the past and the present became the inspiration and impetus for the creation of our own Collection Faceted Furniture.

The faceted elements in Collection Faceted Furniture create a striking visual rhythm while showcasing the wood's natural texture - what inspired this specific geometric approach, and how does it reflect the relationship between nature and craftsmanship in Tirol?

Using of simple, massive details made it possible to demonstrate the unique texture of alpine spruce in volume, and the combination of details gave the product the desired look, a play of shadows and shades of the material, which was successfully emphasised by Tyrolean carpenters.

Collection Faceted Furniture demonstrates remarkable efficiency by using identical 44mm x 44mm cants across all pieces - how did this standardization challenge influence your design process, and what unexpected creative opportunities emerged from this constraint?

The use of identical 44mmX44mm cants across the pieces made it possible to produce the Collection Faceted Furniture in small workshops with a minimum set of tools, and various combinations of the details allowed us to expand the Collection with new products and minimise waste and costs.

The environmental consciousness evident in Collection Faceted Furniture, from material choice to production methods, earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award - could you share your philosophy on balancing sustainability with contemporary furniture design?

Traditional forestry in Tyrol (Austria) and modern production methods of the timber industry make it possible to use high-quality and affordable material from renewable sources for furniture. It is the processing local traditional materials and skilful combination in visual perception of modern trends that allows us to build a bridge between nature and design, complementing and inspiring each other.

Your decision to collaborate with local workshops for Collection Faceted Furniture seems to honor traditional craftsmanship - how has this partnership with Tirolean artisans influenced the evolution of your designs and manufacturing processes?

Tyrol is a blend of centuries-old traditions and innovative processing methods. The expertise of local carpenters have been passed down from generation to generation, and when combined with modern facilities, we have an impressive result. This process is always creative and in search of optimal and sometimes unexpected solutions. The experience gained creates an excellent balance of possibilities in design and production. The Collection Faceted Furniture was manufactured by Anton Raitmayr (tischlerei-ratmayr.at ) and his team, to whom I am grateful for his dedicated attitude to carpentry and openness to new ideas.

The versatility of Collection Faceted Furniture, spanning from chairs to bar stools, presents a cohesive visual language - what were the key considerations in maintaining design consistency while adapting to different functional requirements?

When designing the Collection Faceted Furniture, we aimed to develop a concept for local workshops. We made a general design decision to simplify production, reduce waste, minimise costs and at the same time maintain the competitiveness of the products in the designer furniture market.

Collection Faceted Furniture emerged from a region known for its woodworking heritage - how do you envision this collection contributing to the contemporary dialogue between traditional craft and modern design needs?

Austria and Tyrol in particular are famous for their woodcraft traditions. As a rule, these are small family businesses or workshops. This is in contrast to other regions of Europe where large enterprises produce mass market standardised products. Each workshop is not only a modern production facility, but also its own Tyrolean design. Each product is exceptional and unique. In the Collection Faceted Furniture we strive to show how new forms of modern design are born from simple traditional materials. In our opinion, modern design is a fresh breath for the traditional craftsmanship of local producers.

The low-energy consuming production process of Collection Faceted Furniture aligns with current sustainability imperatives - could you detail how you developed these eco-conscious manufacturing methods while ensuring durability and stability?

The use of identical cants in Faceted Furniture Collection has helped to optimise waste and streamline the production process. This, in turn, reduces energy consumption and makes it environmentally friendly. The production of peaces such as Faceted Furniture Collection allows small production facilities to remain competitive in the market of design articles.

Looking at the market impact of Collection Faceted Furniture since receiving the Bronze A' Design Award, how do you see this recognition influencing the future direction of your studio and your approach to sustainable furniture design?

We are sincerely grateful to the respecter Jury Board for the high appreciation of our Collection Faceted Furniture. With this recognition, we have great hopes and plans. It is necessary to note that the work done by the A’Design Award team cannot be overestimated. The media coverage of our achievement gives us hope to convey our design philosophy.

The structural integrity of Collection Faceted Furniture relies on precise geometric calculations - could you share some insights into the technical challenges of achieving stability while maintaining the collection's distinctive aesthetic lightness?

The Сollection Faceted Furniture is made of spruce. This material has a soft texture. That is why the details of the products are slightly oversized. And to avoid visual imbalance, we hid the lower part of the seat inwards in relation to the seat surface itself. Due to this technique, the products do not look massive, and their strength and stability are sufficient. To emphasise the beauty of the spruce wood and to enhance the play of texture and increase comfort, we decided to cut the detail edges at an angle. This idea originated the Collection Faceted Furniture's name. Thanks to these nuances, we have the Collection Faceted Furniture made of traditional in Tyrol wood material in fresh modern design.
