Interview about Jazz Interior Design, winner of the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award 2024

About the Project

When jazz enters the interior, the diversity that combines ruggedness and delicacy showcases a individual personality. This project involves the living space of a single man and his cat. The entire room is centered around a gray-black color scheme, aiming to highlight the texture of exposed concrete, metal components, and glass. It is complemented by a reddish-brown wood grain, adding warmth to the cool tones. The team attempted to integrate the concept of Well Building Standard into the residence, incorporating design techniques such as air, water, light, thermal comfort, and materials.

Your innovative integration of WELL Building Standards into Jazz Interior Design sets a new benchmark for healthy living spaces - could you elaborate on how this holistic approach influenced your design decisions, particularly in balancing wellness features with aesthetic elements?

Under the impact of extreme weather and the pandemic in recent years, we have sought to introduce the concept of a healthy lifestyle by integrating aesthetics and science to reflect the core values of our design. At the same time, our design team aims to echo the brand's original intention: "to enable a harmonious coexistence between space and nature."

The exposed concrete and metal components in Jazz Interior Design create a striking interplay with the reddish-brown wood grain - what inspired this specific material palette, and how does it reflect the personality of both the resident and his cat?

The homeowner prefers a light industrial style in black and gray tones. The design team aims to select raw materials as much as possible, incorporating elements like iron, aluminum, reeded glass, wood panels, OSB boards, and the raw look of exposed concrete. This approach minimizes excessive processing, preserving a calm and understated aesthetic.

Your creative solution for the cat pathway in Jazz Interior Design seamlessly integrates pet-friendly features with sophisticated design - could you share the thought process behind incorporating these elevated walkways while maintaining the space's minimalist aesthetic?

In previous design projects, we experimented with a "cat skywalk," and it seems the cats really enjoyed it. In this project, after installing the ERV system and concealed dehumidification equipment in the ceiling, there was still sufficient space. So, we incorporated the cat pathway in a recessed form. The design team also thoughtfully planned a variety of pathways for the cats, considering both horizontal and vertical movement options.

The changing room in Jazz Interior Design features an intriguing combination of reeded glass partitions and aluminum column systems - how did this design solution evolve to address both natural lighting and storage challenges?

The dressing room is positioned between open and enclosed spaces, allowing light to pass through. This design enables users to see into adjacent spaces as they move, enhancing the interior’s richness. The aluminum post system within the dressing room can be customized with various expandable hardware to meet storage needs.

Jazz Interior Design's central courtyard arrangement with its uniquely angled bookshelves creates a stress-relieving atmosphere - what drove your decision to incorporate these distinctive angular elements, and how do they contribute to the overall well-being of the space?

The central courtyard in this project addresses the issue of closely spaced neighboring buildings, while also increasing indoor sunlight exposure. A desk with a window view and a non-traditional display bookshelf are placed here, instantly creating a relaxed and stress-free atmosphere in the space.

The Bronze A' Design Award-winning Jazz Interior Design showcases a remarkable balance between ruggedness and delicacy - could you walk us through how you achieved this harmonious contrast while maintaining the project's core identity?

The selection and combination of materials in this project showcase a blend of rugged and refined textures. Dark tones are layered throughout the space, symbolizing the "jazz" spirits of diverse harmonies merging within the environment.

The implementation of ERV systems and concealed dehumidification equipment in Jazz Interior Design demonstrates a sophisticated approach to air quality - how did you ensure these technical elements remained unobtrusive while maximizing their effectiveness?

At an early stage of construction, the design team implemented an integrated design process, collaborating with the homeowner, architect, and builder to plan and reserve beam sleeves. This approach allowed the ERV system and concealed dehumidification equipment piping to easily run through the ceiling space.

Your use of artistic and matte paints in Jazz Interior Design creates a subtle yet impactful visual experience - could you elaborate on how these specific finishing choices enhance the space's natural calmness and complement the lighting design?

Apart from the living room ceiling, which retains its original exposed concrete look, all interior walls have been coated with artistic and matte paints that closely matches the texture of concrete. With natural light coming in from all four sides of the house, the aim is to preserve this raw, original style.

The shoe cabinet design in Jazz Interior Design's elevator hall features an intriguing approach to material authenticity - what led you to choose drilled Lumber core plywood without additional processing, and how does this align with your overall design philosophy?

The drilled Lumber core plywood, free from excessive processing, showcase the homeowner's strong personal style while also being low in formaldehyde, aligning with sustainability principles.

Looking at the future impact of Jazz Interior Design's innovative approach to single-occupant spaces - how do you envision this project influencing the evolution of urban residential design, particularly in terms of wellness integration and personalized living spaces?

This is the design team's first attempt to introduce the WELL concept into residential design. In light of changes in the broader environment, the design team aims to address the clash between architectural needs and nature within the interior space, while also responding to urban environmental issues. Additionally, we seek to assist the homeowner in incorporating a forward-looking healthy lifestyle.
