Interview about Futuristic City Concept Art Illustration, winner of the A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award 2024
Futuristic City envisions a future city where futuristic architecture incorporates elements of art deco, art nouveau, and historical styles, creating a fusion of classic aesthetics and innovation. This project also explores the fusion of architectural styles and the human-centric approach in futuristic city design. By adding classic aesthetic elements and a humane touch, this series aim to create a captivating visual experience. It challenges the conventional depiction of white and high-tech sci-fi cities and showcases the rich history of architectural design.

View Design DetailsThe inspiration for Futuristic City comes from my experiences in Shanghai and Los Angeles—two cities where history and modernity coexist. I wanted to challenge the conventional sci-fi aesthetic by blending towering glass skyscrapers with classical sculptures and neon lights. This fusion represents a future where technology embraces cultural heritage rather than erasing it.
Many sci-fi cities feel cold and detached. I wanted a more inviting, human-centric future by incorporating rounded arches, decorative details, and historical influences. This approach suggests a city that values cultural heritage alongside progress, making it feel lived-in and relatable.
Blender helped me establish precise structures, mood and perspective, while Photoshop allowed for rich detailing and atmosphere. This hybrid workflow let me balance technical accuracy with artistic expression, creating a visually immersive city with depth and texture.
Winning an A’ Design Award for Futuristic City reinforces the idea that sci-fi environments can benefit from historical influences. I hope this approach inspires more concept artists to blend past and future elements in entertainment design. Integrating cultural history into futuristic settings can create more distinctive and meaningful worlds in games and films.
I drew inspiration from Roman architecture for its grand arches, structural harmony, and timeless forms, while Art Deco influenced my design with its geometric elegance, verticality, and decorative detailing. Shanghai’s Bund, where colonial-era buildings contrast sharply with Lujiazui’s futuristic skyline, shaped my understanding of architectural juxtaposition. Similarly, Los Angeles’ diverse mix of Art Deco, postmodern, and contemporary architecture expanded my perspective on blending different styles. These influences allowed me to create a cityscape that feels both futuristic and deeply rooted in artistic tradition, making it visually unique and immersive.
I ensured that historical influences enhanced rather than overpowered the sci-fi vision. The lighting, color choices, and intricate details helped maintain the balance—keeping the city visually compelling without making it feel outdated or overly futuristic.
My architectural design followed key principles: cultural continuity – ensuring that the past is visible in the future through familiar architectural elements, always adding storytelling elements, dynamic lighting and mood, and a balance between complexity and readability.
Environmental storytelling plays a crucial role in Futuristic City. The neon lights, architectural motifs, and diverse structures hint at a society where technology and tradition coexist. Details like aged facades, retro signage, and atmospheric lighting suggest a world that has evolved rather than started from scratch, making it feel rich with history.
I began with research and concept sketches, followed by blocking out the city in Blender to establish scale and structure. Once the composition felt strong, I moved to Photoshop to refine the details, textures, and lighting. Constant iteration ensured that every element contributed to the overall mood and narrative of the piece.
By merging historical and futuristic architecture, Futuristic City challenges the notion that progress must erase the past. This concept can influence real-world architectural discussions, encouraging designers to create future cities that preserve cultural identity while embracing innovation.
