Interview about THIDAMOON HOTEL, winner of the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award 2024

About the Project

A room where you can see the huge rock Tategami, which has been worshiped as a place where gods stop by before landing on the island from the sea, and has been an object of worship. Designers created a room that can only be felt here by using materials that can only be obtained on the island as interior materials. The interior of the guest room is made using sea sand and coral collected from the sea of Amami Oshima.

Your innovative approach to incorporating local materials, particularly sea sand and coral from Amami Oshima, sets Thidamoon Hotel apart - could you elaborate on how these indigenous elements influenced your design philosophy and connection to place?

Amami Oshima is one of the most naturally rich islands in Japan, and is registered as a World Heritage Site. By incorporating materials from the island into your space, you can feel the beauty of Amami even more.

The integration of the sacred Tategami rock formation into Thidamoon Hotel's design speaks to a deep cultural reverence - how did this spiritual element shape your architectural decisions and the guest experience you aimed to create?

In Amami Oshima, there is an old story that a god came from across the sea and arrived at Tategami Rock. When you look at Tategami Rock from the hotel, you can experience a mystical experience as the sun rises at the exact angle.

What unique challenges did you encounter while designing Thidamoon Hotel on a remote island, particularly regarding material procurement and craftsman coordination, and how did overcoming these obstacles influence the final design?

Materials and labor could not be procured locally, so they were procured from Kagoshima Prefecture. For areas that required advanced construction techniques, we shipped items made in factories so as not to affect the design.

The concept of "Neriyakanaya" - paradise beyond the sea - is beautifully embodied in Thidamoon Hotel's design - could you share how this cultural narrative influenced your spatial planning and aesthetic choices?

The biggest attraction is the view of nature from the window. The space is simple and earthy tones are used to avoid excessive design. Also, because I wanted to show the view from the window simply, there are no furniture or decorations around the window.

How does Thidamoon Hotel's suite room "En" create different atmospheric experiences throughout the day, from sunrise to moonlit nights, and what design elements were crucial in achieving these transformative moments?

You can enjoy the sunlight reflecting off the sea as the sun moves throughout the day. All lights in the space are dimmable, allowing you to enjoy the moonlight and stars. The guest rooms are designed simply so that you can enjoy nature.

In creating Thidamoon Hotel, how did you balance modern hospitality requirements with the preservation and celebration of Amami Oshima's cultural heritage and natural environment?

We place the utmost importance on the conservation of nature, the environment, and the flow of time on Amami Oshima. We eliminate excessive hospitality and plan with respect for nature.

The interior spaces of Thidamoon Hotel showcase a remarkable harmony between local craftsmanship and contemporary design - could you walk us through your process of achieving this balance?

Amami Oshima has traditional industries that have been handed down through the generations and are still being carried on today. These techniques are incorporated into the interior design and placed throughout the space.

What role did the surrounding Pacific Ocean play in shaping Thidamoon Hotel's design narrative, and how did you incorporate this maritime influence into the guest experience?

The view of the Pacific Ocean, which changes with the seasons, is one of the most important elements of the hotel's story. In early spring, you can see mother whales and their calves gracefully raising their young.

Looking at Thidamoon Hotel's success in connecting with its cultural context, what insights could you share with other designers about creating spaces that honor local traditions while meeting contemporary needs?

I would be happy if I could share the importance of naturally incorporating the traditional culture and traditional industries that have been passed down on Amami Oshima into the space, and proceeding with the design with a timeless mindset and respect for nature, rather than proceeding with a trendy design approach.

How has winning the Bronze A' Design Award for Thidamoon Hotel influenced your perspective on designing hospitality spaces that celebrate local culture and natural elements?

I felt the importance of continuing to treasure our local culture. I would be happy if tourists could experience the beauty of the island and become more interested in the natural environment.
