MAKI IZAWA

Interview about Para Waraji Sandals, winner of the A' Footwear, Shoes and Boots Design Award 2023

About the Project

Para Waraji was created to ensure a secure and peaceful everyday life through prevention. Originally made of straw, Waraji was worn by Japanese commoners and samurais to protect their feet and ward off bad luck and disasters. Para Waraji, however, is made of a durable parachute cord, making it suitable for daily wear and emergency situations. This innovative product not only provides foot protection but can also be untied and used as a rope for wound care and fixation. By blending traditional Japanese craftsmanship with modern technology, Para Waraji sets a great example of innovation.

Your innovative fusion of traditional Japanese Waraji with modern parachute cord in Para Waraji Sandals represents a remarkable bridge between heritage and contemporary needs - could you share the journey that led you to reimagine this ancient footwear for today's challenges?

The journey to create Para Waraji began with a deep respect for the traditional Japanese Waraji, a piece of footwear that has protected and supported people throughout history. However, as I observed the increasing frequency of natural disasters and global uncertainties, I felt compelled to develop a product that not only preserved this rich heritage but also met the practical needs of modern society. I envisioned a sandal that could transition seamlessly between daily life and emergency situations, providing both protection and peace of mind. Integrating parachute cord into the traditional Waraji design allowed me to create a durable, adaptable product that bridges past traditions with present-day resilience.

The Para Waraji Sandals' dual functionality as both protective footwear and emergency resource is particularly intriguing - what inspired you to incorporate this versatile survival aspect into your design, and how did you balance traditional craftsmanship with modern utility?

The inspiration to incorporate a survival element into Para Waraji came from the sense of uncertainty in modern society and the increasing importance of being prepared for emergencies. I wanted to create a product that could serve not only as footwear but also as a practical tool in unexpected situations. While researching traditional Waraji techniques, I explored ways to balance strength and functionality using a modern material like parachute cord. This approach allowed me to retain the essence of tradition while providing practical utility suited for contemporary life, resulting in the creation of Para Waraji.

In developing Para Waraji Sandals, you have addressed the declining numbers of traditional Waraji craftsmen - how did you approach preserving these ancient techniques while introducing new materials and manufacturing processes?

In developing Para Waraji, I aimed to respect the essence of traditional Waraji craftsmanship while introducing a new material that could meet modern needs. I independently researched traditional Waraji weaving patterns and shapes, exploring how to integrate parachute cord without losing the original essence. This research process involved careful consideration to ensure that both the beauty and functionality of traditional techniques were maintained, while also enhancing durability to meet contemporary demands. Through this design, I sought to honor the past while adapting to the needs of today.

The cultural significance of Waraji as protective talismans against misfortune adds a fascinating dimension to Para Waraji Sandals - how did this spiritual aspect influence your design decisions and material choices?

The protective symbolism of Waraji deeply influenced the design of Para Waraji. Traditionally, Waraji sandals were seen as talismans, believed to ward off misfortune and protect the wearer. I wanted Para Waraji to carry this sense of security into the modern age, allowing it to serve as a “lucky charm” that protects you simply by having it with you, much like traditional Japanese Waraji. Parachute cord, with its strength and durability, was chosen to embody this protective quality, creating a sandal that not only safeguards the feet but also provides a sense of psychological reassurance. The design reflects a blend of physical and spiritual protection, aiming to give users both comfort and confidence in uncertain times.

Your Bronze A' Design Award-winning Para Waraji Sandals demonstrate exceptional attention to ergonomic detail - could you elaborate on how you achieved the barefoot sensation while maintaining foot protection and comfort?

To achieve a barefoot sensation with Para Waraji, I focused on creating a sandal that feels light and natural while still offering essential protection. The weaving pattern of the parachute cord was specifically designed to mimic the flexibility and breathability of traditional Waraji, allowing the foot to move freely and comfortably. Additionally, the cord’s adaptability allows it to conform to the shape of the foot, providing a snug yet gentle fit. By blending the simplicity of traditional Waraji with modern materials, Para Waraji provides a unique barefoot-like experience that doesn’t compromise on safety or support.

The parachute cord weaving pattern in Para Waraji Sandals appears to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing - what were the key considerations in developing this specific weaving technique to ensure both durability and visual appeal?

When developing the weaving technique for Para Waraji, my priority was to create a pattern that combined strength with aesthetic elegance. I studied traditional Waraji weaving methods and adapted them to work with parachute cord, which required adjustments to enhance durability without sacrificing beauty. The pattern was designed to distribute pressure evenly across the sandal, preventing wear and tear while maintaining visual harmony. The result is a sandal that not only withstands daily use but also showcases the intricate beauty of Japanese craftsmanship, making it both practical and visually appealing.

Given the rising global interest in sustainable and multifunctional design, how do you envision Para Waraji Sandals evolving to address future environmental challenges and emergency preparedness needs?

Looking ahead, I envision Para Waraji evolving to incorporate even more sustainable materials and processes, addressing environmental concerns while maintaining its multifunctional purpose. As we face increasing climate challenges, the need for durable, eco-friendly products becomes more pressing. I am exploring options for biodegradable or recyclable materials that maintain the strength of parachute cord. Additionally, I aim to enhance the sandal’s utility for emergency preparedness by integrating more survival-oriented features. By continuing to adapt, Para Waraji can remain a reliable, sustainable option for both everyday wear and unforeseen situations.

The adaptable tying system of Para Waraji Sandals offers users personal expression through various wearing styles - what inspired this customizable aspect, and how does it reflect your philosophy about the relationship between user and product?

The customizable tying system in Para Waraji was inspired by the traditional Japanese Waraji, which feature unique lacing techniques to secure the foot comfortably. Additionally, it was born from the idea that footwear should reflect individuality and personal expression. I wanted users to feel a connection to the product, making it truly their own through various wearing styles. This flexibility aligns with my design philosophy, which emphasizes the relationship between user and product as interactive and personal. By allowing users to adapt the sandal’s fit and appearance, Para Waraji fosters a sense of ownership and creativity, making each pair unique to its wearer.

In creating Para Waraji Sandals, you have successfully merged practical functionality with cultural preservation - how do you see this approach influencing future innovations in footwear design?

I believe that merging practicality with cultural preservation is a powerful approach that can inspire future innovations in footwear design. By honoring traditional techniques while adapting to modern needs, designers can create products that resonate on both functional and emotional levels. Para Waraji exemplifies how blending heritage with contemporary design can lead to innovative solutions that stand out in today’s market. I hope this approach encourages the pursuit of innovative ideas rooted in cultural heritage, finding new ways to preserve and celebrate heritage while addressing today’s challenges.

The Para Waraji Sandals project demonstrates remarkable sensitivity to both tradition and innovation - what key lessons from this design process would you share with emerging designers who aim to bridge cultural heritage with contemporary needs?

One of the key lessons I would share with emerging designers is the importance of respect for tradition. When bridging cultural heritage with contemporary needs, it’s essential to approach each design decision with a deep understanding of the cultural significance behind traditional elements. At the same time, creativity and open-mindedness are crucial for adapting these elements to serve modern purposes. Through Para Waraji, I learned that meaningful design emerges when we honor the past while innovating for the future. I encourage young designers to embrace this balance and explore how cultural heritage can inspire new, relevant solutions.
