Lamps Collection Concept Design

Ariel Palanzone

Interview about Lamps Collection Concept Design, winner of the A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award 2023

About the Project

This personal collection of lamps presents an innovative proposal in relation to the conception of lighting objects, which in addition to fulfilling their primary purpose also have a strong sculptural charge that gives them an artistic function and makes them unique. The floor lamp is influenced by kinetic art, so through its articulated and flexible structure the user can direct the light at will. The nightstand lamp resembles a bitten apple in shape, playing here with the metaphor of light as a source of creativity so that the user can feel inspired to use it as a study and reading lamp.

Your innovative approach to merging kinetic art with functional lighting in the Lamps Collection Concept Design raises intriguing possibilities - could you elaborate on how this artistic influence shaped your design decisions, particularly for the articulated floor lamp?

I always try to find inspiration both in works of art and in everyday situations. In terms of art, I admire many kinetic artists from the Op art movement, such as Victor Vasarely. I also remember an inspiring everyday situation when I was in a grocery store and watching the bags stretch in different and interesting ways as different products were put inside.

The metaphor of light as a source of creativity, embodied in your nightstand lamp's bitten apple form within the Lamps Collection Concept Design, is fascinating - what inspired this specific symbolic connection between illumination and inspiration?

Thank you very much for your insights! The apple has always been a source of inspiration for me because of its symbolic meaning, from its connection with Newton and creativity, to its biblical connotations associated with desire or fertility

How did your background in graphic design influence the sculptural and artistic elements of the Lamps Collection Concept Design, particularly in achieving that delicate balance between form and function?

It has had a decisive influence, since the first thing I do is analyze through pencil sketches how the flat form looks, and based on that morphological analysis I then transcribe it to the three-dimensional plane.

The Lamps Collection Concept Design showcases an interesting use of translucent materials for creating veiled, mysterious atmospheres - could you share the experimental process that led to selecting these specific materials and their light-diffusing properties?

It emerged after doing an exhaustive search and investigation on the different types of lighting fixtures that are on the market, and realizing that those that were most interesting to me were those whose light was diffuse, since that generated a more interesting and mysterious atmosphere in the environment.

Your mention of Japanese design's influence on the Lamps Collection Concept Design, particularly its embrace of imperfection, is intriguing - how did this philosophical approach manifest in your final designs?

I am a great admirer of Japanese culture and its philosophical concepts applied to both life and design, both with its strong connection to nature, emptiness and acceptance of the imperfection of materials as well as the purity and simplicity of its forms.

The tactile interaction elements of the Lamps Collection Concept Design allow users to control light intensity through pressure - what inspired this specific approach to user interface design, and how did you develop these intuitive control mechanisms?

This also emerges from research into where the lighting sector is heading today. There is a very strong connection between lighting and people's emotions, which is why the user being able to adjust the light and decide what intensity or temperature is most appropriate for them depending on the time of day or their own mood makes the product not only meet the user's usage needs but also their emotional needs.

In developing the Lamps Collection Concept Design, how did you address the technical challenges of maintaining design integrity while incorporating flexible 3D-printed materials, particularly for the articulated components?

In order to successfully complete the product development process, countless feedback processes arise between collaborations from different areas, such as industrial designers or engineers specializing in new technologies and materials, seeking to optimize these resources in relation to production times and costs, so that the sale price of the product does not rise too much and that the spirit and values of the product are also reflected as faithfully as possible in the transition from the digital to the physical plane.

The Lamps Collection Concept Design demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental consciousness through LED lighting and recycled materials - could you elaborate on how sustainability influenced your design decisions from concept to execution?

This is a key point since as designers we must be aware of the impact we cause in the short, medium and long term on our planet if we make decisions that are not aligned with ecological awareness.

Looking at the evolution of the Lamps Collection Concept Design from exhibition to winning an A' Design Award, how has this recognition influenced your vision for future lighting design innovations?

Participation and winning this competition have had a very positive impact on my career, as it has generated many positive repercussions from colleagues, users and companies linked to lighting, which gives me greater self-confidence and helps my work to reach a wider audience.

The sensual "stretching" of curved shapes in the Lamps Collection Concept Design creates interesting tensions and dynamics - could you explain how you developed these specific forms and their relationship to contemporary abstract sculpture?

In this case I was experimenting with some old elastic stockings and analyzing how they stretched as I put objects inside them. Another event that influenced me was going to the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro and finding there a sculpture by Ernesto Neto made of an elastic fabric stretched between two bricks.
