Interview about Glorium Saffron Packaging, winner of the A' Packaging Design Award 2022

About the Project

The Glorium package consists of three parts. The outer cylinder has symbols of flowers that grow from the ground to the sky. The inner base has a crown in which the main glass is placed and adds to its beauty. The descriptions of saffron are written inside the crown. The third part is saffron glass, the twist inspires the lid, which is inspired by saffron flowers and the body in saffron branches, and the reflection of light in it multiplies the beauty of the red color saffron.

Your innovative approach to the Glorium Saffron Packaging's three-part design, particularly the symbolism of flowers growing from ground to sky, beautifully merges functionality with cultural significance – could you share the creative journey that led to this architectural decision?

The three-part design of Glorium reflects saffron’s journey from soil to sunlight, symbolizing growth and value. This architectural concept emerged from an exploration of saffron’s cultural heritage, where the plant represents prosperity. By layering the glass container on a crown-like base with a corrugated cover, we aimed to create a sense of elegance and reverence, mirroring the natural lifecycle of saffron and enhancing its visual appeal as a luxury item.

The Glorium Saffron Packaging's unique combination of matt black exterior and gold ribbons creates a striking visual contrast – what inspired you to choose this specific material and color palette to elevate the perception of saffron as 'red gold'?

The matt black exterior with gold ribbons was selected to emphasize saffron’s luxurious status as 'red gold.' This color palette creates a visual contrast that captures attention and evokes a sense of refinement. The design aligns with traditional luxury aesthetics, using gold to symbolize wealth and rarity, while the matt black background highlights the vibrancy of the saffron within, ensuring a memorable and premium unboxing experience.

The crown-like base of the Glorium Saffron Packaging serves both aesthetic and functional purposes – how did you balance these dual requirements while ensuring the design maintained its luxury appeal?

Balancing aesthetics and functionality in the crown-like base was achieved through precise engineering and design. The base provides stability while enhancing the visual grandeur of the packaging, making the glass container appear as a treasured item elevated above ground. This structure not only ensures secure placement but also maintains the elegance and luxury expected from a premium saffron product.

Your Bronze A' Design Award-winning Glorium Saffron Packaging features intricate details in the glass container, including twisted elements inspired by saffron flowers – could you elaborate on the technical challenges faced during the development of this specialized glass component?

Designing the twisted glass elements requires advanced techniques to achieve the desired effect without compromising durability. The twisted structure allows light to interact beautifully with the saffron inside, but crafting these twists demanded precise control in glassblowing and mold-making. Each detail had to be meticulously shaped to ensure both aesthetic appeal and practical resilience during handling and transport.

The Glorium Saffron Packaging project, developed between March 2021 and January 2022 in Vancouver, represents a fascinating blend of Persian cultural elements with contemporary design – how did your background influence this cross-cultural approach?

My background in Persian culture, where saffron holds deep symbolic value, inspired me to incorporate traditional motifs with modern aesthetics. The design reflects the essence of Persian artistry in a contemporary form, celebrating saffron’s cultural roots while making it accessible and appealing to a global audience. This fusion honors the heritage of saffron as both a valuable spice and a symbol of refinement.

The corrugated canopy design of the Glorium Saffron Packaging symbolically represents the plant's growth toward the sun – could you discuss how this metaphorical element enhances the overall user experience and brand storytelling?

The corrugated canopy represents saffron’s natural growth toward sunlight, adding a metaphorical layer to the packaging. This design choice invites users to appreciate saffron’s journey from cultivation to consumption. By visually narrating this growth, the packaging not only elevates the unboxing experience but also aligns with the brand’s story, where saffron’s life cycle is celebrated in every detail.

In developing the Glorium Saffron Packaging, you mentioned creating appeal based on functionality and aesthetic characteristics was critical – how did you navigate the balance between luxury presentation and practical usability?

In Glorium’s design, achieving functionality without sacrificing luxury was essential. We ensured that each element, from the outer cover to the glass container, was easy to handle and store. The design is user-friendly, allowing for smooth assembly and disassembly, while maintaining a premium feel that reflects saffron’s high value and significance.

The Glorium Saffron Packaging's distinctive three-part design creates a ceremonial unveiling experience – what role did user interaction play in shaping the final form and assembly sequence?

User interaction was central to Glorium’s design, with each part crafted to create a sense of ceremony. The layered design builds anticipation, leading users through a sequence that feels like unveiling a treasure. This approach reinforces the luxurious experience, making the act of opening Glorium a memorable ritual that honors the product’s exclusivity.

Looking at the success of the Glorium Saffron Packaging, particularly its recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award, how do you envision this design influencing future luxury packaging solutions in the specialty food sector?

Glorium sets a standard for combining luxury with cultural significance in specialty food packaging. Its success highlights a demand for designs that tell a story while ensuring functionality. I envision future packaging in this sector embracing similar concepts, where products are celebrated not only for their quality but also for the experience and cultural resonance they bring to consumers.

The research phase for the Glorium Saffron Packaging involved gathering information about nature formation and specifications – could you share specific insights about how this research directly influenced your final design decisions?

Research into natural forms, especially the growth patterns of saffron, played a key role in shaping Glorium’s design. Observing how saffron flowers grow inspired the twisted glass and corrugated canopy, which represent both beauty and resilience. This research informed decisions that honored the essence of saffron, resulting in a design that resonates with its natural elegance and strength.
