Interview about BrightCell Lighting, winner of the A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award 2022
BrightCell is a chandelier that comes out of a human, somewhere in all the vessels of the body. The main part of the chandelier consists of two layers, the outer one is made of glass crystal and the inner one is made of opaque white opal glass. Its two-layer and cloudy form evokes a sense of energy for the user and conveys calmness to the user and values the feelings of users. The reflection of light is seen inside the lighting and it shines and creates calm and soft light for the environment.

View Design DetailsThe design draws directly from the cellular structure of red blood cells, with the outer crystal layer mimicking their translucent membrane and the inner opal glass reflecting their dense, oxygen-carrying core. This duality emphasizes light diffusion and transparency, encapsulating the functional elegance found in biology.
The transparency of the crystal layer paired with the soft opacity of the opal glass creates a balanced visual contrast that diffuses light gently, evoking tranquility. This combination mirrors the harmony of natural systems, reinforcing the goal of emotional calmness within living spaces.
By incorporating fluid curves and an asymmetrical yet balanced form, the design captures the organic flow of blood cells in motion. This subtle dynamism is further emphasized through the way light interacts with the layered materials, creating a sense of vitality.
The challenge lay in achieving even light diffusion without hotspots. We optimized the opal glass thickness and developed precise curvatures in the crystal layer to reflect and scatter light uniformly, creating a soft glow that envelops the surroundings.
The balance was achieved by prioritizing warm, diffused lighting and ensuring an unobtrusive form. Every technical decision—from LED placement to material composition—was guided by the intent to evoke a serene atmosphere without compromising efficiency or quality.
The dimensions were carefully calibrated to maintain a balance between presence and subtlety. They allow the fixture to serve as a focal point while remaining proportional to most residential and commercial spaces, reflecting versatility and elegance.
This fusion encourages designs that prioritize emotional resonance alongside functionality. Future lighting concepts may draw deeper inspiration from nature, leading to fixtures that not only illuminate but also enhance well-being through biomimetic principles.
Ease of assembly was integral to the design process. Modular components, minimal tooling requirements, and intuitive instructions were prioritized to ensure a seamless user experience, reflecting a commitment to accessibility and practicality.
We adopted lean manufacturing techniques, utilized recyclable materials, and collaborated with suppliers to streamline production. These strategies reduced waste and costs while preserving the high standards of craftsmanship and aesthetic quality.
Winning the award reinforced the importance of innovation and interdisciplinary inspiration. It has motivated us to continue exploring bold concepts that challenge conventional lighting paradigms while maintaining a user-centric focus.
