House of Solace is a compact 490 sq. ft studio apartment in one of the Art Deco buildings built during the British Rule in India. Rejoicing at the European architecture and the luxuries like an over 10ft ceiling and symmetry it affords, the designer converted a one bedroom apartment into a large studio apartment for a singleton and decided to redesign the space using the mantra of high functionality and low maintenance ensuring its tranquil beauty was maintained.

The decision to create an open-plan layout was central to this transformation. By demolishing the wall between the living room and kitchen, we established a continuous flow that not only visually expanded the space but also fostered a sense of connectivity, essential for a compact home.To maximize functionality, we focused on multi-purpose furniture. For instance, the large desk was strategically positioned by the window to harness natural light, creating an inviting workspace that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. This configuration allows for productivity while maintaining a connection to the living area, which is vital for a singleton who works from home.The color palette was another critical decision. We opted for a sophisticated mix of whites, blacks, and greys, accented by electric blue and yellow. This choice not only enhances the visual appeal but also contributes to a feeling of spaciousness. The use of these colors creates a modern yet timeless atmosphere, making the compact area feel both elegant and livable.In addition, we incorporated design elements that create visual interest without overwhelming the space. The herringbone pattern of the wooden-look tiles extends from the floor to the walls, drawing the eye upward and creating an illusion of height. By using a tall mirror, we not only provide a practical element for dressing but also create an illusion of depth and light, crucial in a compact studio.The innovative runner that flows into a circular rug was designed to establish a visual connection throughout the space. This runner, incorporating our chosen colors of black, white, electric blue, and yellow, acts as a unifying element that ties the room together. The circular rug at the base adds warmth and comfort, contrasting the geometric lines of the mirror and enhancing the textural diversity of the space.Execution involved careful consideration of materials and placement. Choosing wooden-look tiles arranged in a herringbone pattern was driven by both aesthetic appeal and practical considerations. The herringbone layout adds visual interest and a sense of movement, making the compact space feel more dynamic. Technically, these tiles are durable and low-maintenance, aligning with the client's need for a functional living environment. Extending the tiles up the living room wall creates a cohesive look that visually enlarges the space and enhances the urban sophistication of the apartment. The kitchen island was designed as a centerpiece that embodies both innovation and practicality. Our choice of raw cut plywood edge pieces was driven by the desire to incorporate natural materials that reflect the warmth and character of the space while ensuring durability. Plywood is lightweight yet strong, making it an ideal choice for kitchen applications, where heavy use and exposure to moisture can be concerns.In developing this design, we aimed to create a visual contrast between the rustic texture of the plywood and the sleek, modern appliances that flank the island. The client's need for a spacious desk within a compact studio was paramount, so we positioned the desk by the large window to maximize natural light, which is essential for a productive work environment. This location not only enhances the functionality of the workspace but also allows for a connection to the outside, making the space feel less confined.To ensure that the office setup aligned with the overall aesthetic of the apartment, we opted for a custom-designed desk that features a sleek silhouette and incorporates yellow drawers that tie into the apartment’s color palette. This choice maintains visual harmony while providing necessary storage solutions, eliminating clutter and enhancing productivity.The integration of decorative elements was also crucial. We included a custom-designed ceiling lamp that complements the terrazzo finishes used throughout the apartment, creating a cohesive design language.
