Interview about Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System, winner of the A' Baby, Kids and Children's Products Design Award 2021
Nemoo is a physical memory capture system designed for fighting against infantile amnesia. It assists with tracking a baby's memory from its perspective for the first three years of its life. It also allows retrieving the important moments in the baby’s growth by playback with virtual reality glasses. The system consists of a baby wearable device, app, and virtual reality glasses. Nemoo wants to build a connection between childhood memory and future self, to help users know themselves better and retrieve the lost childhood.

View Design DetailsThe inspiration for Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System came from a personal curiosity about the fleeting nature of early childhood memories, known as infantile amnesia. As someone deeply fascinated by human behavior and emotional connections, I began reflecting on how many formative experiences from early life are lost to memory as we grow older. Observing how parents often try to preserve their child’s milestones through photos or journals, I realized there was a gap in capturing these moments in a way that felt interactive and tangible for both parents and children. This led me to explore how design could help bridge the gap between memory and experience, creating a tool that actively engages with the emotional and sensory aspects of memory preservation. Nemoo became a way to capture the essence of these moments—not just as static records, but as a living, interactive system that encourages revisiting and connecting with those precious early years.
The integration of virtual reality playback in Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System was envisioned as a powerful tool to transcend the limitations of traditional memory preservation methods. By immersing users in recreated environments and moments, VR offers an unparalleled way to relive experiences that might otherwise fade into abstraction. For parents, this technology allows them to step back into the world of their child's early years, rekindling emotions tied to those fleeting moments. For children, it provides an interactive window into their formative years, helping them connect with a part of their lives they might not consciously remember. The goal was to create a bridge between past and present, where memories are not just observed but felt. This heightened emotional connection fosters deeper bonds within families, encouraging shared storytelling and mutual understanding. The immersive nature of VR ensures that these memories are not just archived but actively relived, making them more meaningful and impactful.
Creating the wearable component of Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System was all about balancing advanced technology with the comfort and safety of infants. To do this, we focused on designing something that was both practical and gentle. We started by studying how babies move and what materials would feel soft and safe on their sensitive skin. With advice from child development experts and pediatricians, we chose hypoallergenic, lightweight fabrics to ensure the wearable wouldn’t cause irritation or discomfort. The technology inside, like sensors and memory storage, was made as small and lightweight as possible to keep the device easy to wear. We made sure everything fit seamlessly into the design so it wouldn’t feel bulky or awkward. To ensure the wearable was both safe and reliable, we tested it rigorously. The final product is simple for parents to use while being comfortable for babies, combining smart features with a thoughtful, baby-friendly design.
It was inspired by the need for a seamless, hands-free way for parents to capture significant moments in their child’s life without disrupting the experience itself. Parents are often juggling multiple tasks, and traditional methods like taking photos or videos can interrupt those special moments. By allowing memory capture through a simple spoken word, we wanted to ensure that parents could stay fully engaged with their child while still preserving those memories. This feature also enhances the user experience by making the process intuitive and effortless. Parents can naturally call out memorable events, which are then recorded and stored. For children, it creates a system where memories are captured in a way that feels integrated into their daily lives rather than staged. This thoughtful design choice helps ensure that the focus remains on meaningful interactions, making memory preservation a smoother and more organic part of family life.
The scientific understanding of infantile amnesia—where early childhood memories are often lost due to the brain's developmental processes—played a foundational role in shaping both the design and technical specifications of Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System. Research into early memory formation highlighted the fleeting nature of sensory and emotional experiences during infancy, guiding us to prioritize capturing these moments as holistically as possible. We designed the system to integrate sensory-rich data, such as audio, visual, and contextual cues, which are more likely to evoke emotional resonance later in life. Studies show that multisensory experiences can help strengthen memory recall, so we ensured that the system captured moments in a way that could recreate the environment and emotions associated with them. This research also influenced the timing of memory capture—focusing on moments that are developmentally significant, such as first steps or family interactions. By embedding these principles into Nemoo's design, we created a system that respects the science of memory while offering families an intuitive and meaningful way to preserve their child’s earliest milestones.
The diary book-inspired packaging of Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System was designed to emphasize the importance of long-term memory preservation and family storytelling. Diaries have historically been personal and cherished objects, used to record moments that matter most. By mirroring this form, the packaging creates an emotional connection with the idea of safeguarding memories as something tangible and timeless. This design choice reflects my broader vision of making memory preservation not just a functional activity but also a meaningful, ritualistic experience for families. The packaging is more than a container—it’s an artifact in itself, encouraging parents to revisit and reflect on their child’s milestones as they would flip through the pages of a diary. It aligns with the goal of Nemoo: to ensure that captured memories are not only stored but also celebrated and shared, becoming part of a family’s ongoing story across generations.
One key feature is the trigger-word activation system, which allows parents to actively record moments without interrupting their engagement with their child. This contrasts with passive monitoring and empowers parents to curate memories intentionally. Additionally, the inclusion of virtual reality playback transforms these recordings into immersive experiences, letting families relive early milestones in a way that traditional monitors cannot offer. The wearable component also sets Nemoo apart. Designed to unobtrusively capture sensory-rich data like sound and context, it ensures that the focus remains on preserving emotional and developmental milestones. These thoughtful elements redefine Nemoo as a tool for meaningful memory preservation, far beyond the capabilities of standard baby monitors.
The multi-device connectivity feature of Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System enhances its ability to capture comprehensive family narratives by allowing multiple perspectives to be recorded simultaneously. This capability ensures that memories are not limited to a single viewpoint but instead encompass the collective experience of the family. For instance, while one device might capture the baby’s immediate surroundings and reactions, another could record the parents' voices or siblings' interactions, creating a richer and more layered memory. This feature also encourages collaborative memory preservation, where different family members can actively participate in documenting moments from their own perspectives. By integrating these recordings, Nemoo helps build a more complete and dynamic narrative that reflects the shared experiences of the entire family. This holistic approach to memory preservation not only deepens the emotional connection to the captured moments but also ensures that the memories resonate across generations, celebrating the collective journey of family life.
In the future, Nemoo Physical Memory Capture System could evolve by incorporating AI to analyze significant moments and enhance them with personalized sensory cues like sounds or visuals, strengthening memory retention. Advanced virtual and augmented reality features may allow users to not only relive but also interact with their childhood memories in richer, more meaningful ways. Integrating with digital archiving systems would ensure these memories are preserved and accessible for generations. This evolution aims to deepen the connection between early childhood experiences and lasting adult memories, fostering a greater understanding of personal histories.
This achievement highlights the importance of creating products that go beyond functionality to touch on deeper emotional and developmental needs. It has inspired me to continue exploring how design can preserve and enhance experiences that shape who we are, particularly during formative stages like early childhood.Winning this award also emphasizes the value of blending creativity with empathy, pushing me to consider even more innovative ways to design for connection, memory, and storytelling. It serves as a reminder that thoughtful design can bridge gaps in human experience, helping people preserve and relive moments that matter most. This recognition motivates me to keep creating products that resonate emotionally while meeting practical needs, further solidifying my commitment to designing with purpose.
