View Design DetailsIn 2004, I became involved with the Bioneers movement, which highlighted innovative solutions for restoring people and the planet. This experience transformed my career as a graphic designer, prompting me to seek out sustainable and eco-friendly practices. As a result, my approach to design and my perspective on digital usage changed significantly. Six years later, in 2010, the Facebook Museum—ASCII Digital Design Museum was launched.
ASCII, or American Standard Code for Information Interchange, is a digital code set that represents letters, numbers, and other symbols. It is widely used as a standard format for transferring text between computers. As such, utilizing ASCII is the most natural choice for any digital environment, especially in HTML platforms. The Facebook Museum of ASCII Digital Design serves as a repository for ASCII patterns, aimed at preserving the contemporary practice of "handmade" pattern designs that predate the era of the AI generation.
The year 2024 will mark twenty years of my career in creating eco-friendly art and design. The Facebook Museum ASCII Digital Design Museum was incubated between 2009 -10 while I was pursuing my master's degree in multimedia arts. During my research work on social media platforms, Facebook became the focal point of my research work as a platform and ASCII tool for creating art and graphics directly within HTML's simple text fields and digital walls. More importantly, I explored the potential of these open digital spaces for real-time visual collaboration and graphic art exchange.
As a multimedia artist and designer, I was immersed in dance and music from an early age. For me, dance represents the highest form of physical expression, while music embodies the pinnacle of artistic creation, composed of musical notes arranged in various patterns. Fine art offers me the freedom to explore pure visual pleasure, whereas graphic art adheres to specific rules and guidelines. Drawing from this diverse background and training, I have cultivated a strong curiosity and a desire to learn how to develop innovative solutions for broader applications.
The rise of computers and the digital era has opened up new possibilities, giving rise to a generation that embraces innovative thinking and environmental sustainability. The introduction of Cloud technology has eliminated the need for physical art supplies and studio spaces, enabling artists to store their work digitally.
I am deeply honored to receive recognition from the A' Design Award, which marks the beginning of an exciting new journey. The A' Design Award's global influence, with its prestigious presence in various locations, has enabled The Facebook Museum—ASCII Digital Design Museum to embark on an international tour featuring exhibitions and private collections. I am truly grateful to be among the winners of the A' Design Award.
My inspiration for moving away from the traditional alphabet to ASCII and Unicode characters came from the moveable type system, a visual representation of Morse Code, and the computer keyboard. My research on the Facebook Museum ASCII Digital Design Museum centered on exploring how simple HTML platforms and special characters can streamline the standard graphics-making process.
The Facebook Museum ASCII Digital Design Museum boldly embraces today's digital landscape by providing a fully accessible exhibition space in the cloud that operates 24/7. It fosters active participation and collaboration among users. As the pioneering cloud-based, social media-driven digital museum, it empowers individuals to engage with art and design at any time and from anywhere on the internet, driving real-time interactions. This groundbreaking model sets the standard for the future of art collaborations, exhibitions, and museum curation.
During my design practice, I made two surprising discoveries. First, I realized that there are endless possibilities and diverse variations of graphics that can be created in a very short amount of time. Second, I found that my daily design practice became incredibly enjoyable, making it anything but boring. More importantly, I observed a rich community engagement that emerged from the process of creating graphics online in real time. Ultimately, I learned how easily ASCII and Unicode designs could be adapted for various applications and uses.
As a graphic artist, both preservation and presentation are crucial elements of my work. In 2013, I self-published "ASCII Graphic Glitch Art Volume 1," followed by "ASCII Graphic Glitch Art Volume 2" in 2015. These two volumes document the ASCII patterns I created during my first five years of daily activity at The Facebook Museum ASCII Digital Design Museum. Currently, I am working on my next ASCII book, which will showcase the digital prototypes I have been developing over the past ten years.
