Your innovative approach to the Lavazza Desea Coffee Machine's touch interface, organizing selections into distinct coffee and milk groups, represents a significant advancement in user experience design - could you elaborate on the research and insights that led to this intuitive arrangement?

I think every user interface should have some sort of visual hierarchy to facilitate user interaction. The user interface of Deséa is quite complex for a coffee machine and it really seemed quite natural to arrange the selections into two distinct groups.

The Lavazza Desea Coffee Machine's form language, with its controlled surfacing and refined details, appears to draw inspiration from diverse sources including vases and automotive controls - how did these varied influences shape your design decisions and contribute to the final aesthetic?

We were looking for inspiration in many different areas when designing this product. The pronounced shoulder line is indeed inspired by a vase that I came across during the design process. I realized how the specific section would help us to achieve a lower perceived height. While the automotive controls have been an important reference for the development of the user interface.

As the design manager at Lavazza's Innovation Center, how did you ensure the Lavazza Desea Coffee Machine maintained brand identity while pushing boundaries in both functionality and form?

I think it is important to design a new product in a way that it remains an expression of the values, the identity and the established form language of a brand while still evolving in order to stay relevant and contemporary. This is not easy. A tricky thing.

The Lavazza Desea Coffee Machine's patented milk foaming technology stands as a notable achievement - could you share the development journey behind this innovation and how it enhances the authentic Italian coffee experience?

The great thing about this feature is the ability to foam milk directly within a dedicated glass mug. A unique and elegant way to prepare milk based coffee beverages. The technology was developed by our own in-house engineering department.

In developing the Lavazza Desea Coffee Machine alongside the Idola on a shared platform, what unique challenges did you encounter, and how did overcoming these obstacles influence the final design?

Developing a new product is challenging. Even more so if you're working on two related products at the same time. You need to guarantee that everything works out perfectly for both products. Not easy.

The shoulder profile of the Lavazza Desea Coffee Machine distinctively lowers its perceived height - what inspired this specific design choice, and how does it contribute to the machine's overall user experience?

The inspiration for this exact profile section came with a vase. It had a specific shape that was particularly elegant and inspired the shape of Deséa's main shell.

Your attention to colors, materials, and finish in the Lavazza Desea Coffee Machine earned recognition with the Platinum A' Design Award - could you detail the decision-making process behind these crucial aesthetic elements?

Naturally we dedicate a lot of attention to colours, materials and finishes. On all our products. They are important aspects in product design that reflect our vision and allow an immediate and tangible expression of our values.

The Lavazza Desea Coffee Machine's dedicated glass mug design appears integral to the complete coffee experience - what considerations guided its development, and how does it complement the machine's functionality?

We wanted to create a premium product experience with a solid glass mug that would work from a functional point of view, but also echoes the shape of the iconic Lavazza espresso cup. In hindsight it seems to be the obvious choice, doesn't it?

How does the Lavazza Desea Coffee Machine's acoustic feedback system enhance user interaction, and what role did user testing play in refining this feature?

This is actually part of our wider aim for accessible, universal design. Acoustic feedback plays an important part and we're working to integrate this where possible, User tests are an integral part of our development process in general and they also allowed us to refine the acoustic feedback.

Looking ahead, how do you envision the Lavazza Desea Coffee Machine's design innovations influencing future developments in home coffee machine design, particularly regarding the balance between automation and user engagement?

Deséa is a very important part of our current product portfolio and the design will most definitely inspire a balanced vision and product development in the near future.
